Richard ended his call and placed the cell on the table. “The job’s done. The boys asked me to tell you they despised the assignment. Some have daughters the same age.” He glared at Adrian with contempt.

Adrian sliced off a piece of pork and dipped it into the red wine sauce. What the hell was the problem with everyone? Despised the assignment? These state killers of yesteryear who once would not have blinked at torturing or murdering activists, white or black, now moan about a minor assignment. My paid assassins have the audacity to complain about the work they get? Screw them.

He grabbed the Zinfandel and took a huge gulp.

The twitching face and pursed lips spoke volumes to Richard. Adrian was angry but he would never verbalise it in public, and certainly not in a full restaurant. No, Adrian’s style was to suppress and fester.

Richard disliked the game they were playing. Too much risk, too many actors and authorities. Why not just kill the guy and go? Painstakingly trying to squeeze out a confession was exhausting.

The corner seating on the outside terrace gave the men a wrap-around view of both Franklin and West Broadway so Adrian spotted Tom Leary and Sheila May easily as the two stormed towards Poncho’s Restaurant. Adrian sighed, knowing his pleasant afternoon in TriBeCa, with its lovely converted warehouses and casual atmosphere, and a delicious meal of slow-roasted suckling pig were soon to be rudely interrupted. “They’re coming.”

Richard glanced up, a partial shadow from the umbrella covering his face. Tiny beads of sweat had formed on his forehead as the chilli in his meal took effect. He nodded and wiped his hands on his jeans.

Adrian shook his head at the disgusting habit. He watched the advancing pair. Tom thrusting forward like a boy confronting a bully; Sheila, hair and breasts bobbing in unison, like a high school sweetheart unquestioningly following her boyfriend. Adrian felt his chest constrict slightly and he put his cutlery down in irritation.

He took a quick gulp of water. He had been in numerous situations like this, yet it always riled him. His meals in some of the most exquisite, internationally renowned restaurants flagrantly interrupted by people whose culinary choices would probably be steak, pizza or pasta washed down with some third rate beer. Cold suckling pig was not a prospect he relished. Richard, he noticed, had continued with the tortilla without skipping a beat.

Adrian put on his sweetest smile and rose to his feet. Richard followed, chair scraping noisily on the wooden deck. Both Tom and Sheila were breathing rapidly. “Detectives, may I offer you a seat?”

“We’ll stand,” came the taut reply.

It’s like a West Side Story scene, Adrian thought, two antagonists fronting up to one another.

“Have you actually killed anyone or do you just issue the orders? Keep those hands nice and clean?” Tom demanded furiously. It was not how he had intended to handle the situation but he could no longer tolerate the man’s casual ruthlessness.

Adrian blinked, startled, and breathed in sharply as the words seared him.
